Hypnosis in sport has a long history and was often used under the guise of 'mental training' back when the public perception of the whole area of hypnotism was much more guarded. These days however, you do not need to look too far in any sport to find great champions using hypnotic techniques to improve performance. The worlds number one golfer Tiger Woods being the most famous. All professional sportsmen/women now use visualisation as an important part of their preparation.

Using the conscious (willpower) mind is a short term fix
If we attempt to use our willpower over the more powerful subconscious mind, this is very much a short term proposition, as the willpower is based within the conscious mind, it is limited and will on ALL occasions lose out to the emotional – subconscious mind.
When that pinnacle time comes, you need to know within your mind that you will have mental clarity. You need to be strong both mentally and emotionally. If you have any negative habits programmed within you from an early age. This can sometimes be called upon come that pinnacle moment. If for some reason you are not achieving the performance you know you can; ask yourself are you being held back by something; or maybe you erroneously believe you cannot do it.
When the body is working on adrenaline you need to be able to stay calm and focused, because working in a stressful body you are working within the sympathetic nervous system which speeds up the breathing, heart rate etc. This uses up far too much energy in the wrong areas.
